Poinsettias and Christmas have been associated together and supposedly came from an old Mexican legend.
There once was a poor Mexican girl called Pepita. who had no present to give the baby Jesus at the Christmas Eve Service. Her cousin, trying to cheer her up, told her that Jesus would love even the smallest gift from her. She picks some weeds on her walk to the church and placed them at the bottom of the nativity scene. All of the sudden the weeds were transformed into beautiful red and green flowers.
From that day on they became known as “Flores de Noche Buena,” or “Flowers of the Holy Night.”
Poinsettias are native to southern Mexico and South America. They became widely known in America because of Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first Ambassador from the USA to Mexico in 1825. When visiting Mexico he became interested in the poinsettia plants, sending plants back to his greenhouse in South Carolina. He began growing the plants and sending them to friends and botanical gardens.
As many know the poinsettia is a plant not actually a flower.
The star shape of the poinsettia flower and leaves are thought of as a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem which led the Wise Men to Jesus.
I love to place large poinsettias on our porch. I also love the minature ones and like to place them in small vessels and place on tables around our home.
I’ve painted and sold these two miniature poinsettia paintings, but am in the process of painting of few more. They would make a perfect gift for a special friend! Everyone loves flowers and these petite hand painted poinsettias, all original, make the perfect gift. And what could be better than flowers that last forever?
